Growth has been the default modus operandi for so long it is almost unspoken. This talk challenges 'growth-default' along with other 'defaults' that inform product and design: masculine default, northern hemisphere default, english defaults etc. It is a call to action to challenge the utility of defaults that inform our work. In this talk, Ruby will draw examples from across the globe and show products moving beyond our current paradigms as well as those stuck in default thinking, while arming you with the tools you need to think differently about product design. It will cover things big and small that we can all do to create better products that align with more inclusive values.

Workshop: Unlock the Power of Object-Oriented UX

This two-hour workshop will delve into the transformative realm of Object-Oriented UX (OOUX) – a critical element in the design process. In a world where traditional approaches slice up complexity by verbs, OOUX emerges as the game-changer, enabling designers to break down systems by nouns, aligning seamlessly with how developers think and enhancing collaboration across teams.

Key Highlights:

Rethinking Complexity: Challenge the conventional approach of tackling complexity in digital product design. Explore how OOUX offers a fresh perspective, promoting an iterative and holistic design process.

Objects Over Verbs: Learn the art of slicing through complexity by focusing on nouns rather than verbs. Understand how this shift leads to cohesive, user-centric experiences, steering clear of disjointed interfaces.

Collaborative Synergy: Discover how OOUX fosters enhanced collaboration between UX and development teams. Leverage the inherent object-oriented thinking shared by designers, developers, and end-users for a more streamlined and effective workflow.

Intuitiveness Redefined: Uncover the inherent human tendency to think in objects and how aligning your design process with this innate cognitive behavior makes user experiences more intuitive. Explore how OOUX can elevate the user experience by making it inherently relatable and user-friendly.

This workshop is your opportunity to grasp the missing ingredient in the design process and revolutionize your approach to digital product development.

Piotr Wójcik is a seasoned Freelance UX Designer riding the waves of creativity with over a decade of professional expertise in design and consulting. Piotr is based in Warsaw, Poland. This workshop will be based on his experience of working with the OOUX methodology.

Beyond the design realm Piotr is dedicated to advancing skills around Digital Wellbeing and Sustainable Productivity.

The focus of this workshop is to provide tech professionals with a practical skill set that can be used to minimize the likelihood of negative consequences occurring from our tech creations. The workshop will also help to frame positive outcomes and how we can aim to amplify these. With the prevalence of data-driven products and services that are becoming increasingly intelligent and automated, ethical thinking is a frontier skill set that needs to be developed if we hope to create responsible technology. This workshop is for all tech professionals, regardless of discipline or experience.

Tech Ethics for Practitioners

This workshop is an introduction to tools and ethical approaches to enable tech professionals to engage in critical discussion that will ultimately impact the design and deployment of technology products and services. This workshop is for all tech professionals, regardless of discipline or experience.

The workshop will support attendees to use tools that are informed by ideas from philosophy, psychology, sociology and anthropology. The workshop will:

Give a short overview of why ethical thinking and considerations are important in the tech industry

Introduce attendees to a set of ethical tools and frameworks that they can implement into their work

Share case studies so that tools can be implemented in the workshop and attendees can immediately apply learning

The focus of this workshop is to provide tech professionals with a practical skill set that can be used to minimise the likelihood of negative consequences occurring from our tech creations. The workshop will also help to frame positive outcomes and how we can aim to amplify these.

With the prevalence of data-driven products and services that are becoming increasingly intelligent and automated, ethical thinking is a frontier skill set that needs to be developed if we hope to create responsible technology.

Lisa Talia Moretti is a Digital Sociologist with 15 years experience working across product and content design. In the last five years, she has gained experience in data governance and new methods of data collaboration through her roles at the Ministry of Justice (UK Government) and The Governance Lab. Over the last seven years, Lisa has worked on the creation of ethical frameworks across the private and public sector and is currently engaged in this work for an international airline organisation.

Lisa is employed by AND Digital in the UK, is the Co-Chair of the BIMA AI Council and in 2020 was named one of Britain’s Top 100 people influencing the technology industry in the category Champions for Change. Her talk, “Technology is not a product, it’s a system”, is available for viewing on Ted.com.

We had Lisa on stage in 2023 with a brillian talk about Designing for Relationships, and are super excited to have her back in 2024 – this time with a workshop!
