Navigating the Crossroads: Embracing Degrowth and Sustainability in Automotive UX

As an automotive engineer with a background in UX design, Elizabeth Musanga is passionate about the intersection of these two fields. She believes that UX designers have a critical role to play in shaping the future of the automotive industry, particularly as we transition to a more sustainable future.

“In today’s world, the automotive industry has predominantly embraced consumerism, often neglecting the profound environmental consequences of this approach. Users have grown accustomed to a specific driving experience, and the need to transform it in response to the imperative of sustainability is clear. Our challenge lies in reshaping these ingrained habits, and in doing so, we uncover both a compelling opportunity and a moral responsibility.

The automotive industry, with its focus on mass production and individual car ownership, has long been a driving force behind consumerism and its associated environmental impacts. As UX designers, we have played a role in shaping this narrative, often inadvertently encouraging a focus on material possessions and impulsive purchasing decisions. However, at this critical juncture, we must rise to the challenge and redefine our role in the automotive industry, embracing degrowth principles and championing sustainable practices.

The current automotive paradigm is unsustainable. The production, operation, and disposal of conventional vehicles contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion, and pollution. Moreover, the industry’s emphasis on individual car ownership perpetuates a lifestyle that prioritizes convenience over environmental responsibility.

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) offers a beacon of hope, presenting an opportunity to reshape the automotive experience while minimizing its environmental footprint. However, we must move beyond simply swapping out internal combustion engines for electric ones. We need a holistic approach that encompasses user-centric design, inclusivity, and a deep commitment to sustainability.

Redefining the automotive experience is not without its challenges. We must break away from the ingrained habits of car culture and guide users towards a more sustainable perspective. This requires a paradigm shift in our design approach, prioritizing efficiency, shared mobility, and eco-conscious materials.

UX designers play a pivotal role in shaping the future of automotive UX. We have the power to influence user behavior, preferences, and expectations. By prioritizing sustainable design principles, we can create experiences that are not only environmentally friendly but also enjoyable and user-centric.

Embracing degrowth principles and prioritizing sustainability in automotive UX is not just an option; it is an imperative. As UX designers, we have the responsibility to shape the future of mobility, creating experiences that are both environmentally conscious and enjoyable for all.”

Key takeaways for the audience

Prioritizing sustainability in UX design: Consider the environmental impact of your designs throughout the entire product lifecycle.

Embrace degrowth principles: Design for shared mobility solutions and promote

sustainable materials and manufacturing processes.

Utilize user-centric design to enhance the user experience of EVs. Make EVs more appealing to a wider range of consumers.

Collaborate with engineers and other stakeholders to drive systemic change. Work together to create a more sustainable automotive ecosystem.

Advocate for degrowth and sustainability within the automotive industry: Be a catalyst for change and inspire others to follow suit.

These days, preferences, habits, and psychological triggers fuel impulsive buying tendencies, and many mobile applications encourage this affecting, in the long term, not just how people behave but also the increasing consumerism. Some consequences of encouraging excessive shopping through digital applications raise ethical concerns, as some users may fall into a pattern of compulsive buying, leading to financial strain and adverse mental health effects. But how can we, as professionals, can start helping people to decrease this behavior? How can we influence people to change their behavior and be aware that a harmless "add to the basket" can cause more harm in the long run?

Encouraging excessive shopping through mobile applications

Our role as user experience designers is to help users to have a pleasant experience while using a digital product, offering, at the same time, an answer or a solution to a need.

In the last couple of years, while the technology advancement had a boom, the companies started to change their vision; alongside them, people’s behavior also began to change. Nowadays, preferences, habits, and psychological triggers fuel impulsive buying tendencies, and many mobile applications encourage this affecting, in the long term, not just how people behave but also the increasing consumerism.

How can we influence people to change their behavior and be aware that a harmless “add to the basket” can cause more harm in the long run?

There are answers to these questions that we can translate into tasks to perform.

Spontaneous Talks Frameworks WORKSHOP

People love stories. We are told time and time again the value of storytelling when we present our UX work. But this is a workshop about Spontaneous Talks Frameworks (STF for short). These are a bit different from your traditional fairy tale that follows the arc and structure of a story. STF may not have a rising action, a climax, or a resolution. Heck, you might go as far to say that STF are not really stories at all.

Spontaneous Talks Frameworks are less about describing a narrative, and more about quickly organizing your thoughts, using a framework. A Spontaneous Talks Framework helps you to organize your thoughts to present UX designs or research findings to your stakeholders. STF can be a fabulous crutch when you need to speak on a topic that you have not prepared for in advance.

In this workshop, Jen Blatz will teach you how to organize your thoughts with these easy frameworks. You will learn how to use this thought organization technique to answer anything — and use it to present your UX work. You will:

Know how to answer (because you organized your thoughts)

Feel confident in speaking (because now you know your answer)

And just do it (that is, speak with less anxiety because you organized your thoughts)

Sometimes neither you nor your stakeholders have the time for a full presentation. These hacks allow you to present information on a short timeline. Spontaneous Talks Frameworks help you break up your story into smaller, consumable chunks so it’s easier to organize and remember.

Jen Blatz is a Lead User Experience Researcher and Designer with expertise that lends itself to any industry. Jen’s path to UX started in journalism and graphic design where she learned the importance of aesthetics, organization, and catering content for the consumer. She has worked in a number of fields including finance, mortgage, cloud storage, security and pet health.

Jen loves being active in the UX community to learn and grow while helping others do the same. She is the co-founder and president of the UX Research and Strategy group, a 501c3 organization, with an international presence with thousands of members and followers. She is the organizer of WIAD (World Information Architecture Day) locally, and speaker for several meetup groups and international conferences like UX Australia, Convey UX, IAC (Information Architecture Conference), UX New Zealand, UX Research and Insights Summit and more.

Visible, Beautiful, Creative, and Accessible!

“Accessibility is the death of creativity”; “You can’t be creative and accessible”; “This site may not be accessible or useful, but it’s because it’s creative!”

How many times have you heard the above, or a combination thereof? On the modern web, there is a tendency to identify “creativity” with “objects that move very fast on the screen without any apparent reason”.

If creativity needed animation, we might as well set fire to most of the world’s museums.

There is also a tendency to identify “accessible” with “ugly” and “sacrificing imagination”. Piccia Neri will debunk these myths in her talk, showing how your website – and business – can be visible, beautiful, creative, accessible – and at the same time, extremely profitable.
