Growth has been the default modus operandi for so long it is almost unspoken. This talk challenges 'growth-default' along with other 'defaults' that inform product and design: masculine default, northern hemisphere default, english defaults etc. It is a call to action to challenge the utility of defaults that inform our work. In this talk, Ruby will draw examples from across the globe and show products moving beyond our current paradigms as well as those stuck in default thinking, while arming you with the tools you need to think differently about product design. It will cover things big and small that we can all do to create better products that align with more inclusive values.

Actionable, engaging, and unforgettable tips on increasing the engagement of 65+ segments

“More than 1 billion people over 60 live on this planet today. They are the fastest-growing category of e-commerce shoppers. Yet, despite goodwill, 2 in 5 feel that technology was not designed for them, and they are twice more likely to abandon a digital product- I believe we can change it.”

Dr. Michal Halperin-Ben Zvi is a seasoned expert working in the intersection between psychology and user experience. Her main area of expertise is in increasing the engagement of older users. She recently wrote a guide on this issue, and is a design strategist and UX researcher. Before getting a PhD in the psychology of aging, she went on a journey to India with her 86 year-old grandma, so she certainly has expertise in the area!

With a proven track record of success, she has collaborated with health, banking, and government services, as well as industry giants like Microsoft, Wix.com, Medisafe, Simply, Moovit, and more, to increase conversion rates and engagement among older users. Best known as the author of the National Guide “LOG IN,” she set standards for inclusive design and led the way in creating impactful, age-friendly digital products.

Key take-aways from Michal’s talk:

Spotlighting the elements that need attention when considering UI, UX, and CX for older users.

How to create guidelines for age-friendly adjustment, and a deep understanding of the logic behind them, which will be demonstrated by various web and app elements that fail to work among older users and possible improvements.

Understanding the importance of the Third-age user-centered approach.

Healthcare – how to consume less and live more

Healthcare systems around the world are under increasing pressure: aging population, disease complexity, workforce shortages – people are living longer, but often with greater suffering and poorer quality of life. The amount of healthcare delivery is going up, but are we ‘living more’?

We have made, and continue to make, great discoveries in healthcare, but the failures of health services today aren’t due to a lack of great scientific progress, but due to a lack of application of those discoveries. The healthcare industry remains poorly equipped to move from exploration to application.

Videha Sharma will be discussing two key messages with us:

– We need to think and work differently and embrace the role of experts outside of science and healthcare to realize the potential of innovation

– We need to continue to move towards preventative models of care

Implementing these will allow us to reduce the amount of healthcare consumption per individual, and across society, resulting in not just longer, but also healthier lives – shifting from ‘sick care’ to true ‘health care’.

In order to imagine a world where healthcare is seamless and focused on health rather than sickness, we need the field of UX and healthcare to come together even more!

Videha is the Clinical Innovation Lead for the Pankhurst Institute for Health Technology Research and Innovation at the University of Manchester. He has a PhD in Health Informatics and completed fellowships in Digital Health, Medical Leadership and Clinical Entrepreneurship. A surgeon by training, he now has a portfolio career spanning clinical medicine and health technology. He leads a range of projects across healthcare providers, academia and industry, aimed at impacting patient care by translating new and emerging innovations into clinical practice.

He is also the co-founder of Fava Health; an early-stage start-up providing digital services that help put pharmacogenetics into practice – unlocking the potential of personalized medicine at scale.
